Burma: The Magical Interlude

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the darling of the Burmese, wins a landmark by-election and brings the dreams of a nation closer to dawn. While full democracy is still a long way off, the people are more hopeful than ever before. Bamboo took a look inside a land that is quite unlike any other. We visited Yangon, Inle Lake, Bagan and walked off the beaten track to discover the hidden Burma and its gracious people.

Human Form Art Exhibit

Contemporary Art Paris: Human Form exhibit at the Galerie Duboys

At the Galerie Duboys, the Human form exhibition presents two artists whose work questions the human body and all its associations, presenting two diverse artistic perspectives which share common themes but also two approaches which challenge and involve the spectator. For one artist the self develops into a vision while the eye of the second artist turns back upon itself. Bamboo chats with Frederique Chauveaux & Michael McCarthy about their work and vision.

Dalrymple and Fraser

An English Chai with Dalrymples

Acclaimed writer and historian William Dalrymple and his artist wife Olivia Fraser have been on an Indian voyage for over two decades. They charted their own maps on this land. Dalrymple reached for the pen and delved into the complex history of the nation. Fraser reached for the brush and set out to paint the soul of the country. Together, the husband and wife duo form a louder and greater presence than the delightful sum of their individual parts. The Bamboo Online was in Delhi and had the opportunity to meet them at their Mehrauli farmhouse.

Inside SomaFM Internet Radio with Rusty Hodge

SomaFM's listeners appreciate the channel's ear for unusual and interesting music, along its with clever and innovative production. The station has received mentions in Rolling Stone, Salon.com, and USA Today. Despite being part of a digital revolution, SomaFM remains something of a welcome anachronism. It is a throwback to the days when commercial radio DJs had the freedom to experiment with new artists and styles, without corporate ownership dictating the terms and content.

An interview with Brian McFadden, NY Times Cartoonist

Brian McFadden is a self-taught cartoonist who has, for a decade, used his talents to comment on America’s increasingly tumultuous social, political, and economic landscape. Political cartoonists have long held a storied tradition in American dialogue, from Thomas Nast to Dr. Seuss to Gary Trudeau. And while it seemed for a time that declining print sales might extinguish the form, the internet has led to an explosion of new, independent voices that are revitalizing the medium. McFadden is one such talent.

A 2007 graduate of NYU’s Gallatin School, he has worked as a session musician for Adam Green, a composer for film and theater, and a member of the rock bands Audiofiction and Furly.

E-603

Bamboo Online Interview: E-603, Mash-Up Artist

Ethan Ward, known professionally as E-603, is one of the most innovative Mash-Up artists currently working today. A DJ and music producer by trade, the Nashua, New Hampshire native is at the frontier of a distinctly contemporary musical form. Using programs now available on any home computer, Mash-Up artists extract elements from popular songs and re-arrange them into entirely new compositions. It is a style related to the "sampling" practice of hip-hop, which itself arguably originates in the Beastie Boys' 1989 album, Paul's Boutique.

Inspiring words from Muhhamad Yunus

I believe that we can create a poverty-free world because poverty is not created by poor people. It has been created and sustained by the economic and social system that we have designed for ourselves; the institutions and concepts that make up that system; the policies that we pursue. I firmly believe that we can create a poverty-free world if we collectively believe in it. In a poverty-free world, the only place you would be able to see poverty is in the poverty museums.
